Mysterious Beeping in House - Help!

Something is beeping in my house and I cant find it for the life of me. I have tried everything. I have spent hours looking for it and I cant find the source.

Its not a smoke alarm. I have taken off each one. Its not the alarm system. I have completely disconnected it and taken it off battery power. The beep remains.

The power on my whole block went out a while ago. Nothing was working. Except the beep. I figured I would let whatever battery it is running on to just run out....well it has been beeping for about a year now...who do I call to help me with this?

It lets out a single beep once every 45-60 seconds. Its so annoying!!!

What should I do?

------------------------------------------

The beep has been found. If you want to know what it was, the answer is below. Although I would suggest reading through the whole thread and take the wild ride as we did. Enjoy.

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
The beep was coming from a Carbon Monoxide detector that was stashed away in a rarely used antique chest. It was left there years ago in my old apartment and forgotten.

I know you said you checked but are you sure it is not a smoke alarm? Mine are wired into the house and will beep like that until I reset the circuit they are on.

Do you have a basement? I had a beeping like this and it turned out to be the smoke detector in my basement. (I know you said it wasn't smoke detectors, that's why I asked about the basement first).

Does the microwave or oven clock need to be reset? Is a phone off the hook or need a reset?

Make yourself a tin foil full head shield, put it on and let us know if you still hear the beep.

Beeping I wouldn't worry about... ticking on the other hand...

Most likely culprit is smoke detectors, mine are hardwired as well (batteries are just a backup)

Also, some HVAC systems may have some beeping abilities.. check that out too.

Have others heard this "beeping" as well? Is the beeping really just the voices in your head being censored?

your alarm system should still be on wired power as well, shouldn't it? are you sure it's not that? Mine "beeps" after a power outage too. I have to press a key on it to silence it.

Wow, a year has gone by and you haven't stumbled across it yet?

Based on that length of time, I don't know if it can be a battery powered device. If it can be turned off, maybe you could go to your electrical panel, and turn off one circuit at a time until you figure out which circuit it is on. That could narrow down the search.

Check to see if you have any pumps or motors on a BACKUP that would be emitting this beep.

Some people have there sump pump/system on backup and could be the problem.

Do you have a generator or gen-tran switch that would have come in the case of emergency that has never been reset?

Do you have a cell phone? Perhaps the battery is nearly dead. That happens to me every few weeks and I can't figure out what's making the noise.

This reminds me of Curb Your Enthusiasm

Anyway, maybe get an electrician to come in or something? Or just grab the whole neighborhood, station each person at different points throughout the house, and you should eventually find it.

Something in your house has been beeping every 45-60 secs. for a year!?! WTF!!! Wow that would drive me nuts. I'd start replacing every battery in every smoke alarm in the house. If that doesn't work I'd go to the fuse panel and start throwing switches till it stops then you will at least know what circuit its on. Best of Luck!!

An old digital watch with an intermittant alarm? Those batteries can last 3 years, though I don't know about beeping every minute for a year.

I had this once. I just ended up siting still, and waiting for the beep. When I heard it, I moved closer to where it sounded like it was comng from. It took about half an hour of sitting still, waiting for the thing to beep, but I finally found it. (smoke detector)

An UPS that needs a new battery, or thinks it needs a new battery will beep like this.

Even with a weak battery, an UPS (that had no power being drawn from it) could beep for many hours through a power failure.

Then, when there is power, it recharges the (possibly slowly failing) battery.

WOW, seriously!

I'm surprised we haven't read about this in the newspapers first.

I'd had also gone wacky by this time. I'd cut off every noise source in the house, close doors or whatever to find this annoyance.

Are you sure it is inside the house? I once woke up in the middle of the night hearing a humming noise. I went all over the house and couldn't find it. Finally, I went outside and discovered my neighbor was pumping the water from his swimming pool.

I know its been way to long. After a couple of months I got used to it. However, my fiance is moving in soon and she is not a fan of the random beeping.

I have had multiple people around the house all at different spots and then point to where it sounded like it was coming from. All of us pointed to different places. I think its in one of the walls. I wonder if there is a sound meter I could get to hone in on it or if I should call an electrician that may be able to do something. I would certainly pay hansomely someone to fix it.

By the way I dont have a basement. Its not the microwave or phone or smoke alarms. I bought the house 2 years ago and it didnt have this problem...so I dont know if it could be something else installed that I may not know about.

Is the interval really accurate, like exactly every 45 seconds, or does it vary? That could tell you if it's an electronic device or something like a smoke detector (which we know it isn't) that has a low-battery signal in it.

I recently had a mysterious beep in my house and it turned out to be my wife's cell phone emitting a "missed call" beep every 60 seconds. It was high-pitched, and thus hard to localize, and the phone itself was in her purse. It took us several hours of intermittant searching to find it.

I vote for the UPS too. I took us a while to locate a beping in our house. It turned out to be the UPS unit tucked away behind the entertainment center.

The source of the sound was very non-directional and hard to actually locate. With all the equipment in the cabinet, we thought it just had to one of these devices complaining. We had to pull the cabinet away from the wall and actually get our ears down near floor level in the area near the cabinet cavity where the UPS is hidden.
