First, I'd like to say thank you for that helpful guide you made. It helped me out a bunch.

My first question is, when you said..."execute the command to run the superpatch with superpatch-67all-NutKase-1.0.tcl" did you use FileZilla or something else. Could you be a little more specific on that detail?

Also, when telnetting files over, do you use port 23? I heard something about port 52 but I don't remember what for.

For your information, I have a limited understanding of Linux (command wise) but I do understand what I am typing in. I am beginning to catch on but go easy on me please!

I used filezilla to ftp the patch files to /var on the tivo. the execution of them is done from telnet. Telnet is on port 23.

Arrow Foiled!

I was all set to go last night with the upgrade on a fresh 250 gig drive. Booted to Linux with the MFS Tools boot disk and got a keyboard error. Linux didn't like my wireless USB keyboard. NEWMAN! Tonight I'll try again with my work keyboard (ps2). I really need to get an old PC that I can run Linux on permanently.

Thank you very much, but you answered 50% of my first question. Filezilla only transfers the files over to TiVo. Then you need to run a telnet program (Hyperlink on Win XP?) to execute them. My other part of the question (the other 50%) is how do you do that? What must I type in to achieve that goal?

Thanks again.

Finding a free telnet program for win xp is really easy. Go to google and type in "telnet putty". Download putty to your pc. It is a small telnet program that does not have to be installed to work. Just create a folder, unzip it and double click on the exe.

Type "telnet <your ip address of tivo box>" and your in.

If you don't like putty find something else.

Yeah, I understand all of that. Perhaps I did not make myself clear. Let me try again......

How do you run a tcl file from Telnet. I don't care what program gets used whether it's Hyperlink or whatever. I don't know how to run it.

Do you just type in the tcl file name and press enter or is there more to do? Are you saying to type this....

telnet superpatch-67all-NutKase-1.0.tcl<enter>?

Finally got 6.2 up and running with the ability to telnet and FTP into it. FTPd the superpatch and set_mrvname files. When I telnet into it and goto /var dir to run them I get no such file or directory. Looking back on the 4.0.1 guide I try to chmod 755 the files like this, chmod 755 superpatch-67all-NutKase-1.0.tcl
./superpatch-67all-NutKase-1.0.tcl with the same message as before.

One thing I noticed when I typed in superpatch-67all-NutKase-1.0.tcl the next line down was .//superpatch-67all-NutKase-1.0.tcl: No such file or directory

And Gunny thanks for the TAB hint, it helps.

ok this is common for 6.2 for some reason
from bash, type tivosh superpatch-67-all-NutKase-1.0.tcl
do the same for set_mrv_name
type tivosh then the name of the script.
It seems this can happen if you use windows built in unzipper on stuff you download for the tivo. I use winrar to unzip all of my stuff these days to avoid the problem.

Thanks Gunny. That cleared things up for me. I'll try it later on.

Oh, and if you thought I might have been a little rude back there, I wasn't trying to be that way. Just frustration of not knowing what to do with telnet. Never used it before and this will be my very first hack.

Say good luck to me. I plan on backing up the disk first.

Gunny,

Thanks for the help! Everything seems to have gone very well. Incidentally, even though I used winRAR to extract superpatch and set_mrv_name, I still had to use tivosh.

Anyway, thanks again! Now I just have to do the slice upgrade on my 4.x box.

Cheers,

Tim

Gunny,
(1) Thanks for a great walk-through! Both of my HDVR2s were running 4.01b and I upgraded one to 6.2 (to see if I liked it) but did something wrong. At the time, MRV was not available for 6.2 so I just left it as-is. Seeing this thread and realizing I could get MRV again, I decided to print your how-to, pull the top off the TiVo, and fix my faux-pas. (Turned out to be a period that was supposed to be a comma!)
(2) In your how-to, I had to make 2 small changes for my TiVo:
Step 6)B) mount dev/hdc /cdrom
was:
mount /dev/hdc /cdrom
and
Step 10) /3_1.5/
was:
/3.1.5/
Both of these are very minor and it very well might be the name on my CD was different but I wanted to mention it.
(3) I will dance at your next wedding for the TAB hint!

Feel like updating your "Guide" to include a link and instructions for TiVoWebPlus and TyServer?

That Kernel location on the cd may vary apparantly. On mine it is how I listed it.
Thanks for the kind words.

Thanks for the great work, Gunny!!!

This is the kind of guide that people need, one you can use.

Not like some of the guides over at "the other place" that are completely indecipherable. And when you ask a question about them you get flamed to death.

I can understand being sick of the same newb questions over and over, but why the attitude when the "guides" suck so bad.

Note: not all of them are bad, but many of the ones I have seen are useless, and I have some experience with *nix.

Speaking from gutwrenching personal experience, unless you upgrade from 4.01b, you need to run two separate scripts (found on DDB) to set the SSID of your router and to set your IP address so MRV works properly. Still no way to set WEP. Unlike 4.01b (which is meant for standalones), 6.2 on Dtivo was never meant to be networked, so the networking setup screens do not appear in 6.2. The many tactics I tried to get this working are detailed in the Other Forum ("Wireless on 6.2"), and the only way I got it to work (with WEP) was to install 4.01b first, and then upgrade to 6.2 with slices.
