Official TC-Con'06 location thread -POLL UPDATED!

Ok Everyone....

We had the first official TC-Con back in 2004 in Las Vegas. Everyone had a blast.

Then there was the sequel.........in 2005

The stories coming out of that sound like all had fun!

Now....onto 2006.

I worked on 2004...Skittles, Hipster and others worked on 2005......

What is it for 2006 that everyone wants???

I was really envious of those who attended this year.....I want to be a part of next year...

A TC-Con committee would be the best.....let's see where everyone wants to go then figure out who will be on the committee

NOTE: I updated and added the "Land Convention/Cruise After" option.

This from Hank's suggestion:

Thanks for getting this started Kevin.

I would like to help in any way to make Con III a success.

I only have one problem. If I'm officially involved, how can I possibly be a surprise guest for the 3rd year in a row?

And of course you've asked the biggest, hardest question first. Where?

Vegas has been so successful, one of course questions changing that magic. The immediate concern is travel distance. Would more East Coasters be able to attend if the location were a city that offered similar attractions.

I know nothing about Atlantic City, other than it's another gambling mecca. Are there similar attractions, facilities etc in AC?

What about DC?

IMHO, New Orleans, and Orlando don't offer the consolidated attractions that I think have contributed to the success of Vegas.

Orlando isn't Vegas without the gambling?
and now for another Bizzarro idea.
How about a TC Con CRUISE?
Gambling, sun, fun, booze, and food!
I could totally get behind a cruise. Plus Summer time cruises are cheapest, especially with group discounts.

A bunch of us discussed a cruise this week... and while many people would like that sort of 'con, it was decided that a cruise was too limiting, since it would require X number of days, between fixed Y and Z dates. I'd guess what's great about Vegas, and why the turnout is so good, is that people can spend 1 day, 2 days, 3 days, or more - whatever they want to, can afford, get time off work, stash the kids, etc.. it's ultimately flexible. A cruise is none of those things, and if we had one, we'd lose alot of participation. Me personally, I love the idea, but I'd rather not do it if it means a 50% turnout.

Well I'll put my two cents in. When we discussed this last year we told everyone if it was in Vegas again we wouldn't be able to make it. As far as I can see this will hold true for 2006. Vegas is great and I love going but for the east coast it's a huge expense to make the trip. I think 2006 should be held someplace on the east coast.

I wouldn't recommend Atlantic City mainly because the casinos cater to an older crowd. As for those of us who can't take smoke the casinos aren't as well ventilated as Vegas. AC is not as clean a city as Vegas. It's not someplace you want to walk the streets.

New York would be a good opition. No gambling but plenty of things to do in the city that never sleeps.

Orlando would be good for families that want to make this more of a family vacation.

I suggest that we discuss this in the main area so that people will see it.

Jack, is a flight to Vegas more expensive than a flight to Orlando or to New Orleans?

I'm a East Coaster too, and would love to see more East Coast people come (and would love to see how many West Coasters would come if it were East), but I'm just not sure how many places could get accomodate us.

We, this year and last year, got 70+ people to come to Vegas. I just don't know if any other place would generate that kind of attendence.

I vote Vegas, Vegas, Vegas. There has been tons of discussions about maybe Vegas every other year and so on, but I just like the idea of Vegas. There are mini meets all over the country so I like the idea of keeping Con in Vegas. Plus, I'm planning on going next year, and I want to go to Vegas.

I'd like to see the Con in a "real" city - a place that's centrally located, generally inexpensive to fly to from just about anywhere, with plenty of local flavor. New Orleans would be interesting, but what I'd really like to see is a Con in Chicago. Accomodations are generally less expensive and easier to find in Chicago than in N.O., and there's much more variety available as far as entertainment/activity choices go.

And let me add one emphatic NO vote for Vegas being the every year destination for the Con. I know a lot of folks here enjoy it. But there are also a number of people here who will probably never attend a Con in Vegas, but would likely attend one elsewhere. As with just about any city, there are some people who just don't like Las Vegas. Why permanently exclude them from attending?

Yes, I can fly to orlando cheaply. I knew this was coming and I just want you to realize that while you're single with a certain amount free income. I know have to pay for college so all my play money is virtually gone.

You're kidding me right? MS just had Teched in Orlando. Thousands of IT guys attended so I think they can accomidate 70 people. Does Orlando have as many place to hang out in walking distance? No. Vegas does have that edge.

NYC host thousands of conventions a year as does Atlantic City.

You guys do what you want.

Jack,

I think you misunderstood me, and it seems that I may have insulted you, which is certainly not my intent. I'm not sure what merited, "You guys do what you want." This is a discussion, and I'll be the first (and certainly not the only) person to say that we absolutely missed both you and Jobeth in Vegas this year.

I'm sure Orlando, NYC, and others could accomodate 70 people. I just meant I don't think that many would show up to any of those places.

But I think a disccusion is still a good idea. I hadn't even thought of Montreal, which someone else threw out.

Maybe we should be doing Vegas every other year, and rotating every other year. something like Vegas-Montreal-Vegas-NYC-Vegas-Orlando-Des Moines-Vegas, etc etc.

Oh, and in all likihood, I won't even be able to go next year either. Next June I will either be just out of school and unemployed (and thus unable to go), or just out of school and less than a month into my new job (and thus unable to go).

Since we will likely be in Vegas next year for two other friends/family events, we would like to see TC-Con'06 somewhere else. An east coast or central south location would be great. Ellyn thinks DC would be great.

Another "No" vote for Atlantic City. Not a place you can walk around. I don't think it's gambling that attracts many folks for the Con.

I vote for a place that has lots to do, and lots of opportunities to sit down and re-connect with old friends and meet new friends. We need an area that caters to the convention crowd, that has the ability to provide:

1) Reasonable airfares and easy to get to.
2) Decent, affordable hotel rooms
3) Lots of mingling opportunities
4) Lots of entertainment possibilities without breaking the bank

I like Vegas and I think there's other places to go that would be fun as well. New Orleans or Chicago are possibilities, but I think folks would have to "sell" a location.

Frankly, Orlando bores me. What else is there to do there but hit the theme parks? I don't want to spend my vacation standing in line, even if it is with friends.

There's always the Bahamas or Bermuda off the East Coast, which have lots of things to do and provide some beach time for mingling and gathering. A cruise could work, but that discourages the "fly-in"s who come only for one day, and which possibly eliminates TiVo from attending.

Strangely, at this point in time, Vegas still has as many votes as the rest of the choices combined.

I would suggest running a "Yes/No" poll on Vegas, and then a second poll if Vegas isn't the choice. I would be careful about picking a place that caters to the minority of of choices, but that's my $0.02.

I voted Vegas just because, well, I love Vegas!

A close tie for second place: Chicago or D.C. Both are great cites with a lot to see & do!

We had a "National" meet in DC the year before the first Veags one and it got about 30 people.

However, the board was a bit smaller then.

Yes... while preliminary discussions are in order, I think it's way to soon on the heels of this years event to make any kind of decision where to go.

Those who attended last year, Vegas was the destination and we just happened to meet a bunch of cool people. This year, we (well, I'd say most I suppose) attended to meet and spend time with people and have Vegas as a backdrop.

Do I think it would work in another location? Maybe. But that's what the mini-meets are for.

I'd love to propose that the "national" or "large" meeting be held in Vegas every year because that really does give the most opportunity for people to attend. Vegas flights are always cheap, and it's much more flexible than a cruise destination. Vegas just gives so much more opportunities for spontaneity that I think it'd be hard to give it up. This is coming from someone who in all likelihood won't be able to attend next year unless it was held in Minneapolis or Rochester because of our incoming child. Now, will I do anything I can to make it to wherever next year? Absolutely. But I think Vegas is the better choice for getting newbie people there. Those of us who have attended realize that Vegas is the backdrop, but I think it's the best backdrop because of the breadth of spontaneous and variety of activities. Something I don't think can happen in other locations.

Again, I think it's too soon to make any kind of final decision as to where we should gather in '06, but the discussion will undoubtedly be entertaining to say the least.

We like Vegas too, but logistics have kept us from attending both years. With the actual con being held during the week, we can't afford for Toine to take the time off work to go. He only has 13 vacation days a year. I know this year's con was on a Monday, but it would still have cost him 2 days minimum to make it. We have obligatory visits to family each year, and one of those is to Europe, which takes a lot of days.

I'd love to see the con in NYC next year, but we would probably go if it was in Chicago too. Chicago is an easy hour or so plane ride and the fares are good from EWR. Orlando is also doable. Again, though, we would also like to see the actual con happen on a weekend.

Oh, and I'm another who definitely says AC is a bad choice.

Vegas is an awesome place, no doubt, but why do people think it's cheap to fly there? From Chicago, I couldn't find anything less than $300 whereas I can get just about anywhere else for less than 200. However, I do think that Vegas is just the best place b/c of the breadth of things to do in close proximity. Where else can you find 100 diff't things to do that are relatively cheap for adults to do?

Like AJRitz, I'm one of the people who, simply, just doesn't much like Vegas. Too many years of business trade shows there, and some memories that keep me away.

That said: If it's in Vegas next year I'll go anyway, because the Con is the only gathering we manage where the turnout is so large. Plus, I can't handle another year of being nagged about "why aren't you coming?"

I do like the idea of a central location now and then. I think that Chicago would be a great place for a Con, and there are certainly attractions galore. New Orleans has never done it for me personally, but I'd go, and they certainly have the facilities.

Actually a pattern of a couple years in Vegas, then one year someplace else, might be a nice compromise.

Oh... and Atlantic City? Please God, No.

I was in Vegas last year and loved it. I was unable to attend this year. A couple thoughts.

Let's not forget that New Orleans has gambling, too.

For me the most important thing would be to include a weekend especially if it takes a day to get to the location. I would have been able to go this year had it been Sat-Mon or something like that but rooms are so expensive in Vegas on a Saturday night that it makes it hard for some people. I don't think other citys are quite that different between days of the week.

But barring any major scheduling conflict I will be going next year.

The whole "weekend" thing is part of what makes Chicago such an attractive option, IMHO. Unlike "resort destinations" like Vegas and Orlando, you don't pay as much of a weekend premium. I think it would be much easier to do a Con over a long weekend - like a Thurs.-Mon., with people coming and going, in Chicago than in Vegas or Orlando.
