Hold your horses sparky... Just cause you slacked off one meet doesn't mean your duties are over... Now back on your head.

Get a small flag. Wave it. where does the flag fly? It trails the little pole. (hint: the pole is always attaches to the side where the star field is)

Pretend the flag is attached to a pole on the side where the field of stars are... Now pretend the wind blows from the back of the plane and the flag "flips" around so it's the way you're used to seeing it...

Yeah - but does the space suhttle have a flappity cloth flag? I imagine that would be a teensy little problem during re-entry (heck, even launch!).

Ergo - pointless tradition when it's painted.

<edit> OK. So I'm dense. Sue me.

<sigh>

That's WHY they do it. It's BECAUSE they don't have a flappity cloth flag that they paint it that way. it's to make it LOOK like the way a flappity cloth flag would look WHILE THE AIRCRAFT IS MOVING FORWARD.

I did get it - hense my edit in the last post. Maybe it also needs a sheepish smiley, but I can never remember how to generate that.

Sigh. My self-esteem is shot, for the day. Thanks
(Although I still think it's silly)

There's a lot of pointless traditions that continue, often just to satisfy the superstitions of the crew, though sometimes it's as simple as "because we always did it that way."

Why name aircraft?

Why paint the name on the aircraft?

Why do things to mimic old fashioned ways when modern things have superseded them?

etc.

Not so fast there. I'm sure you'll do something funny at the next meet. Heck there's always next weekend.

(you see the same thing on arm patches on soldiers and such)

so...if a soldier becomes Peter Pan and is flying through the air, the flag's orientation will be correct?

I get the airplane...but I don't get the soldier explanation...

maybe it's some foreign thing (why Ashu and me don't get it)

Soldiers don't have them on each side of thier uniforms. So it doesn't really apply.

I will pay to have any pictures that show me wearing a jacket destroyed. My reputation (as a total clothing slob) would suffer greatly if those ever got published where my family or co-workers could see them!

Will you settle for a piece of floor to crash in? I may even be able to throw in an inflatable mattress!
