Arrow TiVo 7.2 - The Big Switch Is Thrown

You've read about it. Wondered about it. And now it's here...

The big switch has been thrown. The new version of software for TiVo standalone recorders is on it's way!

The official rollout of TiVo 7.2 has now begun. All standalone products will receive this update over the next several weeks.

If you can't wait, you can always hop on the priority list at:
TiVo 7.2 Priority List
(Don't forget - no dashes or spaces in those TSN's...and use all caps!)

Note - we've tried to wipe your minds clean, but if you have any fuzzy half-memories of being in a beta program for this release...you don't need the priority list! You've already been taken care of.

And...TiVo Desktop 2.2 is now available:
TiVo Desktop 2.2

Cheers!
Pony

Great news. Now us Mac users just need to wait for Galleon to support us for 'back to TiVo'.

I use my canon digital camera to take video's which creates avi files. Are these mpeg2? If not how do I convert them?

Does this update just fix the bugs of 7.1?

Still a bit advanced and complicated for most people.

Your Canon camera probably encodes video as MJPEG. You can convert to MPEG2, some discussion here.

Pony,

Please ask the web folks to update the warnings on the network adapters page:

I agree, but unfortunately there aren't any (truly) easy & free programs for converting files to .mpg (that I know of). Someone who isn't technical enough to figure out how to cobble together the tools to do the job will probably need to purchase a ready-made video editing suite such as Sonic VideoWave, Pinnacle Studio, or Ulead VideoStudio, or one of the conversion-only apps like Easy Video Converter, AVItoMPEG, VideoZilla, or a hundred others. Any of those will probably cost at least $30.

...That being said, if you want to try a decent free converter, and don't mind maybe having to get your hands a little dirty learning how to use it, you can try Avi2dvd: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/v...ols/avi2dvd.cfm

Here's a tutorial explaining how to use it to convert and burn an AVI onto DVD: http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/arc...dvd_avi2dvd.cfm

I just tried it, and if you copy the .VOB file out of the temporary directory it uses to create the DVD image (in my case D:\Avi2dvd_temp\DVD\VIDEO_TS) to your My Tivo Recordings folder as something like "My Home Video.MPG", that *should* work for TiVo 7.2, since .VOBs are basically just .MPGs...

(I won't know for sure if this works until my unit gets the download though, sorry - I'll update in a few days).

Just a word of warning if you are using serial control on a Hughes HTL-HD d* box it will not work with 7.2. Your going to have to switch to IR until D* gets off their butt and fixes a bug in the boxes. This is due to D* changing the way serial control works on all their boxes.

In addition to the new desktop and tranferring video between the PC and TiVo, it looks like HME is on by default and guided setup is new.

Hey Pony!
Thanks for the info!

Just wondering if it would ever be possible to have something builtin Tivo central/manage my account online that just let you check your boxes for the priority upgrades? Just a thought.

TiVo connects automatically and downloads the upgrades. When the upgrade is complete you get a message in TiVo Central.

What more did you want?

And what the H$!! happened to this forum!

Edit: Nevermind, somehow I switched to Mobile TC

I think he means an easier way to sign up for the priority then cut and pasting TSNs from manage your account into another form.

Is Pixelization on channel change fixed?

Has anyone who was experiencing the pixelization problem during channel changes (using a digital cable box) seen the problem go away with the 7.2 software? All the new features are exciting, but unless this fixes the problem that crippled one of my TiVos, I'm going to have a tough time getting excited.

Thanks ...

Yessir ladies and gentlemen, I retired one of my old series 1's, bought a series 2 and used all my luck for the rest of the year.

As a Canada-locked TiVo user that can't get upgrades anymore, can someone point to a URL that says what each of the new features in this release does?

Does the 7.2 fix the channel changing for the D10-100 for local channels or is this still considered a D* problem.
