DC Meet: Super NOVA New Year Crash Space Thread

Ok, here it is, the official crash space thread. We have room for a few (:rolleyes people at our place. We'd like to give preference to those flying in (to be nice and help offset travel costs) and those that are volunteering to help out. Hopefully someone <hint, hint> will start a thread about looking into a group hotel / transportation. We're really only limited by how "cozy" you want to be and how freaked out you might be by a four year old bounding around at 7am after late NYE party...

So far as accommodations, we have the following:
  • Basement "Den" - Has queen bed and plenty of room for another air mattress on the floor. Shares a full bath with the basement rec room. Sleeps 1-4.
  • Basement Rec Room - Has a couch that pretty comfortably sleeps one if you're not too tall. Plenty of room for a couple of air mattresses. Shares a full bath with the den. Sleeps 1-5.
  • Family Room - Has a sleeper sofa that makes a double bed and another sofa that is pretty comfortable with room for an air matress. Has access to a half-bath. Sleeps 3-5.
  • Upstairs "Bonus" Room - Has a day bed with a trundle. Has it's own full bath. Sleeps 2.
  • Upstairs "Toy" Room - Has room for an air mattress (maybe two). Has it's own entrance to the "kids" full bathroom. Sleeps 2(-4?).

That's the max so how many people we can crash at our place depends on how comfortable you are being cozy/sharing space. We could probably throw an air mattress in the living room and/or sun room too but I think that's stretching things too much. We also have one double air mattress- hopefully locals and those driving in can lend a few more if they're going to be needed.

So far I have crash requests from:
  • Catburger00
  • JustAllie
  • Bai Shen
  • sschwart

How close are you to DC proper? I may need crash space as well, assuming I can work out the 1 remaining logistical problem (getting from Baltimore to DC on 12/30) standing in the way...

I'm far enough you don't want to drive to DC after the party. Depending on which part of DC, probably 45-60 minutes outside of full-on rush hour. That time of night, much [less] if you don't get behind any DWI checkpoints/accidents... My strong suggestion is crash here or stay near-by for the night.

Then pencil me in for crash space, please?

Not sure yet what my status with being there will be, but we can arrange for you to borrow a Queen-sized Air mattress and (, possibly,) a full-sized mattress out of my sleeper sofa before then.

As for crash space - my parents are visiting and the spare bedroom is occupied. It is not particularly optimal, either - unless you're flying out of Dulles at an unGodly early hour (it's 15+ minutes closer to IAD than Merc's digs, and I can be reliably shaken awake for a ride there half-asleep). So on an if-needed basis, I won't rule that possibility out either - depending on the amount of overflow.

Hmm, the drive from Bristow to Arlington is long and there might be alcohol consumed that night... Not to mention the fact that the roads tend to be dangerous that night due to other impaired drivers!

I might bring a sleeping bag for the New Year's Eve event rather than risk driving home that night. A couch works, but I do have a twin-sized air mattress if you run out of couch space.

BTW, I'm willing to help organize or host other events that weekend. My house is nowhere near as big as merc's. I don't have anything specific in mind yet, but the offer is out there. Perhaps we could use my place as a staging point for a trip into town via Metro. Or we could do pre-dinner margaritas again, although this time I promise to have enough ice and to let someone else decide how much tequila should go in the drinks.

Maybe you should have a co-driver.

I might know a volunteer...

Is co-driver a euphemism for something?

You should definitely fly out here for New Year's Eve, JYoung!

I know this has been mentioned elsewhere, but are there motels nearby? Sean's kind of picky about wanting to stay in a motel.

Yes! There are a bunch linked to Google Maps in Merc's original Super NoVA post.

I will try and get to posting the hotel thread tomorrow.

BTW, I'll be honest. Manassas (and specifically Rt. 234 / Hwy 66 part which is closest) can be hit or miss. Some parts quite nice, some parts not so. I've stayed in a hotel there when we transitioning into our new house and, before we had extra room, have had family stay at a few. Problem is, I have NO memory for hotel names. Once you guys start a thread and maybe find a few hotels/rates you're interested in, I'll drive by them and let you know my opinion.

I don't know. Scary things have be known to happen in NoVA in the winter.

Strange white stuff falling from the sky? I think it's called snow?

If you're lucky, it's only falling. If you're unlucky, there's several inches of that stuff on the ground already!

Getting this thread back on track a bit.

I'm looking at the Courtyard Marriott at Battlefield. It's got GREAT rates at $79, and looks like it's not too far from Casa De Merc. Anyone else care to join me?

When I was looking at various hotels and rates last week for my dearly departed hotel thread, the Courtyard showed no room availability for the 31st. Where do you see rooms available?

Travelocity and the Marriott website still showed availability as of this morning.

Edit: I decided to go ahead and book a room. I went to the Marriott web site directly for the Manassas Battlefield Park location, and booked a room for Friday through Sunday. Room rate of $79.

Re-edit: Oooh, and they have free high speed internet access. Bonus!

I went ahead and booked a room at the Marriot too. I'll be heading down on Friday and can easily pick up anyone coming in to National Airport that afternoon.
