Nyc Dinner On Saturday Nov 19th

OK, I am setting up a poll, and we really need to make our decision by Friday in order to secure reservations for such a large group.

Benefits of each locale have been discussed in the other thread - if anyone has any questions, they can PM me.

So, to make sure I'm up to speed myself on the benefits of each...

Carmine's and Tony's are both "family style" places, meaning relaxed atmosphere and giant portions of food more geared towards sharing? Carmine's is a little pricier, but that's because you're paying for a several course meal?

Stout has private rooms, and if we went there we could get two tables of ten each? The room wouldn't be entirely ours, but it would be considerably quieter than last time? And, this place offers mostly "bar food" (I didn't read the menu last time) in addition to somewhat-authentic-enough Wisconsin pizza?

Then, of course, there's Heartland Brewery which is exactly where we went last time. Obviously we all know that place. I enjoyed it, but variety being the spice of life, I'd have to vote against it. In fact, I'm almost inclined to vote for Carmine's solely because it's the only one listed I've never been to.

But, in loyality to my own suggestion, I will of course vote for Tony's. I just wanted to make sure I understood the other choices.

TONY'S!!!

Cause it's very good food, and I'm all for the round table, and it's spitting distance away from a well know coffee shop.

You got everything right except that Stout does have regular entrees as well as "bar food" type appetizers. You could get steak, chicken, fish, salads, etc.

Is it really? Across the street, you say? Well, wow. Ya know, I hadn't even considered that.

The do have beer.

Come on! Coffee, beer and fondue all under one roof and across the street from the place we're having dinner. How does this not sound like a good idea?

Actually, that sounds like it might be kinda gross. I'm thinking maybe you didn't quite understand what I meant. See, I was saying that the proximity of Tony's to other places hadn't even crossed my mind. Nope. Not at all. I based the recommendation entirely on these reviews. Yup. And those reviews only. I swear.

It was you that pointed out other attractions in the immediate area.

The menu is available at www.stoutnyc.com They also have a price fixed menu listed that we could opt for.

I don't really know any of those places too well, but usually I'm a stickler for cleanliness. We could look up their restaurant inspections and make a final decision from that.

But then again, I had so much fun the last time that I'll go whereever the group decides to go.

Yeah, wow. Ouch.

Anyway, uhm... I have bad news. I just got off the phone with Tony's. I made a reservation for 19 people, but here's the thing: if we want to order off the menu, that's the maximum size our group is allowed to be. If we go to 20+ people, we're required to order off the fixed price menu, which can be found at...

http://www.tonysnyc.com/parties/party_planner.html

Now, on the upside, that comes with unlimited food. If you empty your plate, they'll bring you more. On the downside, it does cost a bit more and is more limiting. In fact, it's way more limiting because we'd have to agree on dishes ahead of time.

Even though I've been there before with a big group, remember, I've never gone with this large a group. So, I didn't know. If it looks like our group is going to be 20+, we may need to consider another place - unless everyone is fine with this. I don't know.

Another idea that theinstigator seems to like is that we merely show up as two groups. If we're 12, 13, whatever per group, there'd be no issue at all. We could make seperate reservations, sit at seperate tables and hope we wind up next to one another.

I gotta say, I'm not too sure I'm for that idea. Now, I love Tony's. I've eaten there before, and I had a great time. The food is wonderful, and the location is quite convenient (for me), but as it turns out, it may not be as ideal of a location as I described earlier. Sorry about that.

So, what's the plan now? It looks like Carmine's and Stout are tied, but after dswallow's post there, somehow I don't see Carmine's getting too many more votes. Do we move to Stout? Deal with Tony's party menu? Keep the group under 20? Go as two groups?

I smell another poll....

I personally don't think that the party menu looks bad, $35 a person to allow for 2 appetizers and 3 entree selection seems pretty reasonable for NYC. We could do a poll on the appetizers and entrees and pick the top choices then see if anybody would flat out not come due to the menu and make any adjustments if necessary do to dietery requirements or whatever.

$35 per person actually makes Heartland look reasonable, considering INCLUDING drinks and desserts and coffee and appetizers and salads and entrees, tax and gratuity, the check got divided out at $40 per person (though thought just dividing it out like that is pretty unfair to many people).

I agree with ellinj - this looks fine to me. Who wants to set up the poll?

Also, I noticed that Tony's has a midtown location (close to Heartland Brewery). Should we explore this option since it is a more convenient location for out-of-towners (and closer to Stouts for after dinner drinks?)

GRRRRR!!!

Uptown Tony's is located just fine for after dinner drinks.

As for the fixed price at Tony's, that's really what everyone wants? Uhm. Well, I'll go pick out a menu just in case.
